"My mother, Mary, wasn’t just the life of the party – she was the party. Always vivacious, she had a very active social life. Even after my dad passed away and she moved from New York to Massachusetts to live with us, she kept busy. Daily church services, activities at the senior center, lunch and shopping with new friends.

But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, everything changed. Her rapid decline was shocking. I worried constantly, lost sleep and neglected my own health. Thankfully, that's when HopeHealth came into our lives." - Rita Black, Grateful Daughter

Her world got even smaller when she fell and broke her hip. Now she needed to use a walker and was dependent on me for basic tasks. I worried constantly, lost sleep and neglected my own health. After Mom fell a second time, her memory declined further, and I had to give up my real estate career to care for her full time.

Thankfully, that's when HopeHealth came into our lives, first with palliative and later hospice care. It was our hospice nurse, Susan, who recognized the toll caregiving was taking on me and recommended HopeHealth’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Program, which provided four hours of respite care with a CNA, Dina, each week. I had no idea these services existed, and this support became a lifeline for both Mom and me.

I was nervous about leaving Mom with someone new but on her days with Dina, I would often come home from running errands and hear her laughing, a sound I hadn’t heard in a long time. The two of them spent hours looking at photos, talking about my Dad and Mom’s life in New York. For me, being able to leave the house for those four hours was a blessing.

Knowing that mom was with someone who really cared about her was priceless.

HopeHealth’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Program allowed me time to care for myself and it gave me peace of mind, too, because I knew Mom was with someone who truly understood her.

Salutation, maybe you know someone who is providing care for a loved one with dementia. Your donation this holiday season will help continue this vital service for families like mine. Your generosity ensures that HopeHealth can provide care and support to those who need it most.

My Mom passed away in July, just shy of her 98th birthday. I’m forever grateful I had the time I did with her—and I couldn’t have done it without the support of HopeHealth and the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Program. Thanks to this extraordinary support, my memories of Mom are filled with joy, peace and laughter.

With heartfelt thanks,
Rita Black
