"My mother, Mary, wasn’t just the life of the party – she was the party. Always vivacious, she had a very active social life. Daily church services, activities at the senior center, lunch, shopping with friends.
But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, everything changed. Her rapid decline was shocking. I worried constantly, lost sleep and neglected my own health.
Thankfully, that's when HopeHealth came into our lives, first with palliative and later hospice care. It was our hospice nurse, Susan, who recognized the toll caregiving was taking on me and recommended HopeHealth’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Program, which provided four hours of respite care with a CNA, Dina, each week. This support became a lifeline for both Mom and me.
I was nervous about leaving Mom with someone new but on her days with Dina, I would often come home from running errands and hear her laughing, a sound I hadn’t heard in a long time.
Knowing that mom was with someone who really cared about her was priceless.
HopeHealth’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Program allowed me time to care for myself and it gave me peace of mind, too, because I knew Mom was with someone who truly understood her.
